What We Do

At Goldman Sachs, our Engineers don’t just make things – we make things possible. We connect people and capital with ideas, solving the most challenging engineering problems for our clients. Join our engineering teams to build massively scalable software, architect ultra-low-latency infrastructure solutions, guard against cyber threats, and leverage machine learning alongside financial engineering to turn data into market-moving action.

Goldman Sachs Electronic Trading (GSET) sits at the critical center of our global equities business. Operating in a dynamic, high-frequency environment, GSET demands dynamic architectural vision, technical rigor, and immediate high-throughput solutions.

Who We Look For

We are seeking an experienced Associate / Vice President who combines deep hands-on technical excellence with the strategic vision required to modernize and scale our core trading systems.

This is a hands-on, highly technical leadership role. You will not only design target-state architectures but will actively dive into existing, complex codebases to refactor, re-engineer, and optimize mission-critical platform components. You are someone who thrives on untangling technical debt, decomposing legacy frameworks into resilient micro-services/modular architectures, and enforcing rigorous engineering standards without sacrificing execution speed or ultra-low-latency performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hands-on Refactoring & Re-engineering: Audit, refactor, and modernize high-throughput, legacy trading systems (Java/C++) to improve maintainability, latency, and throughput.
  • Architectural Evolution: Lead the technical design and transition from monolithic/legacy structures toward modular, event-driven, low-latency microservices and cloud-ready infrastructure.
  • Code & System Quality: Set and drive engineering standards across the team, establishing modern CI/CD practices, robust test harnesses, and automated regression frameworks to safely refactor code in production environments.
  • Low-Latency Performance Tuning: Analyze, profile, and optimize system bottlenecks across order management, client/exchange connectivity, and smart order routing platforms.
  • Technical Leadership & Mentorship: Lead by example through direct code contributions, peer code reviews, and technical coaching for junior and mid-level engineers.
  • Control & Resilience Engineering: Design robust, automated controls (preventative and detective) directly into the trading architecture to guarantee high availability and risk containment.

Skills and Experience We Are Looking For

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience Level: 6+ years (Associate) or 8+ years (Vice President) of hands-on software engineering experience in enterprise-grade environments.
  • Technical Mastery: Deep proficiency in Java (Core Java, concurrency, memory management, garbage collection optimization) and/or C++, along with Python and Shell scripting in Linux/UNIX environments.
  • System Re-engineering: Proven track record of taking complex, monolithic production platforms and successfully refactoring or re-architecting them for scale, resiliency, and performance.
  • Low-Latency & Distributed Systems: Hands-on expertise in concurrent programming, lock-free data structures, asynchronous messaging, and low-latency system design.
  • Testing & Safe Refactoring: Expertise in Test-Driven Development (TDD), automated integration testing, and safe refactoring patterns for mission-critical systems.
  • Architectural Patterns: Strong mastery of modern architectural patterns, domain-driven design, microservices, and design patterns.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical trade-offs to both senior non-technical business leaders and engineering peers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Domain Expertise: Prior experience in Front-Office Equities trading systems, Order Management Systems (OMS), Smart Order Routing (SOR), Algorithmic Trading, or Exchange Connectivity.
  • Protocol Knowledge: Deep familiarity with Asia native exchange protocols and FIX (Financial Information eXchange) protocol.
  • Control Frameworks: Strong background in designing real-time risk, pre-trade compliance controls, and high-availability failover mechanisms.
  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
  • Language Skills: Proficiency in spoken and written Asian languages (Cantonese or Mandarin or Korean or Japanese) is a plus.
