**Software Development Engineer II, UTR Tech, Amazon:** Develop scalable tech for delivery hubs, enhancing associate productivity, throughput, and operational quality. Utilize AWS services, Python, and SQL. Leverage Agile methodologies. Requires 4+ years of experience in software development, with a strong background in logistics and transportation tech.
UTR Tech is an organisation within Last Mile supporting all the delivery stations in the delivery network. A delivery station receives an input set of packages from upstream and performs the required set of operations and processes on the packages to ultimately get them out of the delivery stations for on-road delivery. The associates within the delivery stations use a mobile based application called Dolphin for running the execution operations. As an SDE II on the UTR Tech team, you'll build and scale the systems powering Amazon's fastest delivery promises - Same-Day Delivery (SSD), Grocery, and Rush (1-hr/3-hr) programs across NA, EU, JP, and the Middle East. You'll own services spanning package injection, staging, sortation, and routing that keep millions of time-critical orders on-time, and directly move quality metrics like slot-level DEA and defect BPS. This role blends deep technical ownership with high operational impact: your code runs in a live, sub-hour delivery network where reliability and latency are non-negotiable. You'll partner with product, science, and operations to launch new speed programs and expand grocery (including perishable/chill-chain) into new regions. We're looking for an engineer who thrives on distributed-systems challenges at scale and wants their work to be visible to customers the same day.
Key job responsibilities
- Design, implement, and deploy software solutions that improve quality, performance, and customer experience across major portions of your team's systems.
- Collaborate with customers, stakeholders, and cross-functional peers to understand business needs and deliver the right technical solutions, balancing short-term priorities with long-term architectural goals.
- Actively participate in code reviews, providing meaningful feedback to teammates at all levels, and mentor engineers on best practices for producing high-quality, maintainable code.
- Identify and resolve root causes of operational issues, driving permanent fixes and continuously improving your team's operational processes and reliability.
- Evaluate and integrate generative artificial intelligence tools where appropriate to augment productivity and code quality, applying responsible practices to refine outputs.
A day in the life
You will start your morning reviewing pull requests and providing constructive feedback to teammates, then shift into designing a new feature that addresses a customer pain point. Afternoons might find you pairing with another engineer to troubleshoot a production issue, documenting your system's architecture for new team members, or evaluating a new approach that could simplify an existing workflow. You will regularly engage with product and engineering partners to align on priorities and share progress.
