Google Cloud's Performance, Reliability, and Observability team is seeking an early-career Software Engineer (PhD) to build unified debugging, profiling, and analytics tooling at scale. You will write product and system code for dashboards and traces, explore cross-component analysis, and may apply machine learning to automate anomaly detection in Google Cloud control plane systems. Responsibilities include participating in design reviews, developing automation tooling, and collaborating with Google Cloud teams and customers (e.g., Compute Engine) to understand requirements and debug issues. This role targets graduates or early-career engineers with strong fundamentals in distributed systems, data structures/algorithms, and scalable software.

Minimum qualifications:

  • PhD in Computer Science or related technical fields, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience with software development or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree in an industry setting.
  • 2 years of experience with software development with the use of SQL and advanced algorithms.
  • 2 years of experience with developing large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems, or networks, or experience with compute technologies, storage, or hardware architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 2 years of experience with data structures or algorithms.
  • Experience developing accessible technologies.
  • Experience with one or more of the following: data analysis, big data, f1-sql, log analysis, machine learning.

  • Work with our customers (e.g., Google Compute Engine and other Google Cloud teams) to understand requirements, debug problems, and anticipate needs.
