Software Development Engineer II on the WWGST Grocery Retail & In-Store Experience (GRAISE) team, building embedded software for in-store devices and cloud services in AWS to enable deployment, IoT device management, and provisioning for embedded systems. Works at the intersection of hardware, software, and manufacturing, collaborating with firmware, electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing engineers, as well as ML/AI scientists. Responsibilities include design, implementation, and operation of embedded software and related cloud services, with opportunities to lead cross-functional initiatives and influence the end-customer shopping experience. The role requires ownership, entrepreneurial mindset, and comfort navigating ambiguity in a large-scale retail technology program.

Worldwide Grocery Store Tech (WWGST) is seeking a Software Dev Engineer II to join our Grocery Retail and In-Store Experience (GRAISE) team, implementing deployment, IoT device management, and provisioning software for embedded systems. This role is at the intersection of hardware, software, and manufacturing. You'll be at the forefront of revolutionizing the in-store shopping experience, developing new technologies to create engaging shopping experiences for our customers.

The team owns foundational software for embedded systems. Our goal is to solve interesting scalability problems faced only physical stores. We work with fleets of high powered SoCs used for AI/ML workflows and direct use by customers. This role will work closely with firmware, electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing engineers. This role will also work closely with machine learning and AI scientists.

This role offers the unique opportunity to shape the future of retail technology at one of the world's most innovative companies. The ideal candidate will blend technical acumen with strategic thinking, thriving in a fast-paced environment where they can make a tangible impact on millions of customers' shopping experiences.

Key job responsibilities
A SDE II implements solutions for complex problems that are unique to smart grocery devices, and are rarely encountered in the traditional embedded world. The SDE II owns design, implementation and operation of embedded software that runs on physical devices plus corresponding cloud side services in AWS.

The ideal candidate will also have demonstrated ability to lead broad, cross-functional activities beyond software development. You will invent and deliver on key projects that directly impacts our end customer experience. You'll develop with a team of highly motivated and talented builders who can collaborate with product managers, technical specialists, and principals across the company.

You should be comfortable with a degree of ambiguity that’s higher than most projects, and relish the idea of solving problems that, frankly, haven’t been solved at scale before - anywhere. You will encounter challenging, novel situations every day and given the size of this initiative, you’ll have the opportunity to work with multiple technical teams at Amazon in different locations. We’re looking for entrepreneurs who are passionate about innovating on behalf of customers, can demonstrate a high degree of ownership, and want to have fun while they make history and craft beautiful products.

A day in the life
A typical day may start with a few hours of writing code in Python/Rust/Bash, followed by standup. In the afternoon: drafting of a design for Linux device management or white-boarding sessions on a scalable system design.

Diverse Experiences
Even if you do not meet all of the preferred qualifications and skills listed in the job description, we encourage candidates to apply.
