As an experienced Software Development Manager, you will lead a team of 8-10 software engineers building our server-side ad insertion and reporting service for MediaTailor. You will drive engineering excellence by establishing best practices, architectural standards, and code review processes to ensure scalability and reliability. You will partner with product management to define MediaTailor's technical strategy and roadmap, manage sprint planning, and oversee delivery of complex projects while removing obstacles to execution. You will collaborate with AWS teams and stakeholders, drive hiring and operational excellence, and balance immediate customer needs with long-term investments to position MediaTailor for growth.

AWS Elemental MediaTailor is seeking an experienced Software Development Manager to lead a team of engineers developing our industry-leading server-side ad insertion and reporting service. As streaming continues to revolutionize how the world consumes content, you'll play a crucial role in shaping the future of our technology solutions as they intersect with new domains like generative AI for analyzing video and ad insertion opportunities.
Key job responsibilities
• Lead and mentor a team of 8-10 software engineers, providing regular feedback, career guidance, and technical direction to accelerate their professional growth.
• Drive technical excellence by establishing engineering best practices, architectural standards, and code review processes that ensure MediaTailor's scalability and reliability.
• Partner with product management to define MediaTailor's technical strategy, prioritize features, and create roadmaps that align with customer needs and business goals.
• Manage team resources effectively, lead sprint planning sessions, and oversee delivery of complex technical projects while removing obstacles to execution.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders across AWS, including product, operations, and dependent service teams to ensure seamless integration.
• Drive hiring initiatives by defining role requirements, conducting interviews, and making data-driven hiring decisions while fostering an inclusive team culture.
• Ensure operational excellence by establishing meaningful metrics, implementing robust monitoring systems, and driving continuous improvement processes.
• Balance tactical execution of immediate customer needs with strategic long-term technical investments that position MediaTailor for future growth and innovation.
A day in the life
Your day begins reviewing operational metrics and overnight issues. Mornings include collaborating with product management on feature priorities and technical specifications for new advertising capabilities. You lead team standups, unblocking issues and ensuring alignment on deliverables. Afternoons involve technical design reviews, providing architectural guidance, and conducting 1:1s with engineers to support their growth. You coordinate with other AWS teams on service integrations, review hiring candidates, and balance tactical customer escalations with strategic initiatives. You conclude by meeting with peer SDMs to discuss cross-team initiatives and scaling strategies.

Basic Qualifications
- 3+ years of engineering team management experience- 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
- 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
- Experience with video encoding and streaming media standards
- Experience with video ad serving and ad delivery
- Experience with ad decisioning and reporting technologies and standards like VAST, VMAP, Open Measurement and MRC.

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
