Systems Development Engineer responsible for critical infrastructure automations across global Leo facilities, blending hands-on technical work with automation to improve reliability and scalability. You’ll design and develop automation solutions for Windows and Linux deployment and management, automate network infrastructure, and lead system reliability improvements while mentoring junior engineers. The role involves collaboration with engineering teams on rack design and development of automations and tooling, balancing on-premises infrastructure with AWS cloud deployments to support Amazon Leo’s satellite network.

Role Overview
As a Systems Development Engineer responsible for critical infrastructure automations across global Leo facilities, this role combines deep technical expertise with automation. The position requires independently handling complex technical issues while developing solutions for large-scale problems across facilities. You'll lead technical projects from conception through completion, mentor junior engineers, and make significant contributions to infrastructure improvements. Beyond day-to-day operations, you'll influence technical direction through rack design collaboration with engineering teams and development of automations and tooling. The role demands both hands-on technical work and strategic thinking to drive operational improvements and maintain system reliability. Success requires creating solutions which scale to meet the global scale of Amazon Leo.
Key job responsibilities
- Design and develop automation solutions for Windows and Linux infrastructure deployment and management
- Design and implement network infrastructure automation

A day in the life
Your daily activities span across diverse technical challenges, operational needs, and automations. You might start by troubleshooting a Windows Server cluster issue while monitoring Linux system updates across multiple facilities. You'll write and maintain scripts and automations in Python, Bash and PowerShell to automate routine tasks and improve system efficiency. Managing hardware requires coordinating new equipment procurement, overseeing rack installations, and ensuring proper inventory tracking across facilities. You will work with Networking team to troubleshoot and improve automations. You'll split time between automation work with physical infrastructure and managing cloud-based systems in AWS. The role requires constantly balancing immediate operational needs with long-term infrastructure planning, all while maintaining detailed documentation and inventory control.

The Kuiper Core Infrastructure Development team is responsible for deploying the core infrastructure for Amazon Leo.
Basic Qualifications
- Experience in automating, deploying, and supporting large-scale infrastructure- Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Python, Ruby, Golang, Java, C++, C#, Rust
- Experience with Linux/Unix
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines build processes
- Knowledge of systems engineering fundamentals (networking, storage, operating systems)
- Travel up to 25% of the time
- Can reach and stretch to position equipment and fixtures while maintaining balance

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
