Senior SRE at CME Group, supporting the Markets portfolio and the Globex trading platform. You’ll work with Staff SREs and product teams to define SLIs/SLOs, deliver observability improvements, and drive reliability changes through backlogs and proactive communication. You’ll lead major incident investigations, participate in on-call rotations, and mentor junior SREs and product engineers to embed reliability as a practice. The role includes designing automation for deployment, scaling and recovery, contributing to DR tests, and supporting the migration of markets applications to Google Cloud Platform (GCP) on a Tuesday–Saturday schedule with shift allowance.

About us:

CME Group is seeking a Senior SRE (Tuesday - Saturday + shift allowance) to help, build, operate and scale systems in our Markets portfolio. Markets SREs work on products and applications related to CME’s Globex trading platform. Our systems deliver an exceptional combination of low-latency performance and rock-solid reliability to seamlessly handle the world’s busiest trading days.

The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of SRE principles and practices, enjoy the cut-and-thrust of operating Production systems, be a strong communicator, and may have previously worked in an SRE role, a software engineering role, a DevOps role or a systems engineering role.

About the role:

As a Senior SRE you'll work closely with Staff SREs and Product leaders to drive improvements in the reliability of our systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with SRE leadership and product development teams to define what “reliable” means for our systems, eliciting and documenting SLIs and SLOs via user-journey distillations

  • Act as a partner to product teams, delivering key observability, monitoring and alerting improvements - continuously improving our SLI & SLOs and observability data enabling faster issue detection and incident resolution

  • Takes accountability for delivery of significant changes - ensuring delivery risks and dependencies are managed with regular proactive communication

  • Drive reliability backlog discussions with key stakeholders - identify reliability risks and influence prioritisation

  • Design automation for deployment, scaling and recovery

  • Lead major incident response investigations - demonstrates urgency, puts customer first, ensures system recovery, and leads post-mortems afterwards

  • Participate in on-call rotation

  • Run Production review meetings based on data showing performance against SLOs, error budgets and incidents

  • Contribute to DR and systems resiliency testing & improvements

  • Mentor and guide junior SREs to improve reliability engineering culture

  • Mentor and guide product team engineers on SRE practices - being an advocate for reliability as a practice, not just a role

  • Support the migration of markets applications to Google Cloud Platform (GCP), ensuring a seamless transition

  • Stay informed on emerging technologies & latest industry trends, and recognise opportunities for CME Group

What We’re Looking for:

  • Experience with Linux-based systems

  • Experience with Cloud-based platform(s) - Google Cloud Platform, GCE, and/or GKE a bonus

  • Understanding of application architectures and messaging protocols

  • Strong coding capabilities (scripting languages Python, Bash, etc.); Java a bonus

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills across disciplines

  • Adaptable and flexible, demonstrating a positive and proactive approach towards change

  • A growth mindset; eagerness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced trading environment.

  • Experience driving reliability improvements across a team or service

Desirable

  • Previous experience working in a DevOps or SRE role.

  • Previous experience working with metrics & monitoring, OpenTelemetry, Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana, etc

  • Experience and knowledge of working with distributed systems and working with Docker & Kubernetes

  • Good knowledge of networking (HTTP/TCP/UDP/IP)

  • Experience in Financial markets
