Join Danske Bank's Mainframe Engineering Tooling within Technology & Services as an entry-level developer focusing on COBOL/PL/I tooling and developer experience. You will build and enhance IDE tooling and plugins, contribute to automation for building, testing and deploying applications, and support source code management workflows, while learning through mentoring and onboarding. You’ll collaborate with engineers across teams, participate in pairing and code reviews, and grow in a supportive, global environment based mainly in Copenhagen with colleagues in India, Lithuania and Aarhus.

Location: Copenhagen V, Denmark

Do you want to shape the future of one of the leading Nordic wholesale banks while accelerating your professional skillset? Do you want to play a key role in powering Danske Bank’s operations and help bring our Forward ’28 strategy to life? Then this is your opportunity to join us in Developer experience / Mainframe Engineering Tooling team in Danske Bank’s Technology & Service area.

But first, who are we at Danske Bank?

Danske Bank, the largest bank in Denmark, serves a diverse range of customers from individuals and businesses to large institutional clients. At Danske Bank, we create an environment where creativity and strategic thinking are central to all our activities.

As the largest area of Danske Bank, Technology & Services (T&S) forms the backbone of the bank’s operations and is central to delivering on our Forward ’28 strategy. Within T&S, you’ll find specialists across a wide range of fields such as, GenAI, digital delivery, Services, Data & Analytics, Security, Procurement and more. Together with colleagues across other business units, we play a pivotal role in shaping Danske Bank’s future and turning our Forward ’28 ambitions into reality.

Key Responsibilities:

Danske Bank’s Mainframe Engineering Tooling teams shape the developer experience for our core systems. You will help maintain and improve tooling and automation that support engineers working with COBOL and PL/I applications on the mainframe.

We will agree your initial focus together based on your interests, skills and team priorities, and you may work on the following areas:

  • Build and enhance IDE tooling and plugins used by mainframe developers – including integrations with AI assistants such as GitHub Copilot
  • Contribute to automation for building, testing and deploying applications
  • Support source code management workflows and repository standards
  • Gather and present environment and platform information to improve visibility
  • Maintain coding standards and developer guidelines, including clear examples
  • Assist with environment maintenance and troubleshooting of developer tools
  • Write and improve documentation and onboarding materials
  • Collaborate with engineers across the teams through pairing and code reviews

This is an entry-level role. You are not expected to know every technology we use, and you will learn on the job with support from experienced colleagues. Curiosity and a willingness to learn matter most — we will help you build the rest.

Who We Are Looking For:

We welcome candidates from varied academic and practical backgrounds. What matters most is curiosity, a willingness to learn and an interest in developer tooling. Exposure to different languages or environments is helpful because it shows adaptability, but it is not required.

Some examples of valuable traits include:

  • Interest in developer tooling, automation and improving the developer experience
  • Experience with and/or interest in using AI to accelerate developer productivity
  • Comfortable learning new languages, tools and environments
  • Experience with at least one programming language; exposure to both compiled and scripting languages is a plus
  • Familiarity with Linux or another Unix-like environment is an advantage
  • Understanding of core software engineering practices such as version control, testing and code reviews
  • Comfortable collaborating and documenting in English across teams and locations
  • Collaborative mindset, openness to feedback and a user-focused approach
  • Problem-solving skills and attention to detail, especially when troubleshooting

Nice to have (not required):

  • Experience with IDEs, build tools or CI/CD concepts
  • Examples of learning or using multiple languages or stacks (e.g. Java, .NET and scripting)
  • Any exposure to COBOL, PL/I, REXX or mainframe concepts, or an interest in learning them

Benefits of Starting Your Career with Us:

By joining the ‘T&S First Year Tech’ onboarding programme, you’ll take part in a series of learning sessions and social events designed to give you a smooth introduction to T&S. Throughout the programme, you’ll grow both personally and professionally while gaining insights into the different areas across T&S. You’ll also build strong connections and a reliable network that fosters collaboration from the very beginning. A rewarding salary structure, comprehensive health benefits, and various perks. A balanced work environment supporting personal and professional success. Opportunities to build and nurture relationships, becoming a vital member of your team.

Mainframe developer tooling is a part of Danske Bank’s Developer Experience tribe, which builds the platforms, tools and practices that enable engineers across the Group to deliver quality software efficiently. Within the tribe, two Mainframe Engineering Tooling teams, each of ten people, focus on the developer experience for COBOL and PL/I on the mainframe. We are primarily based in Copenhagen, with colleagues in India, Lithuania and Aarhus.

Our teams combine deep, long-standing experience of the bank’s systems with a strong commitment to welcoming and growing new talent. You will work alongside colleagues who know the platform in depth and are keen to share that knowledge through mentoring, pairing and structured onboarding. We value curiosity and practical problem solving, and we make space for learning as part of the job.
