Overview

Printing is a fundamental utility of modern computing. Universal Print is Microsoft’s cloud‑based print service, part of the Windows and Devices organization, that replaces traditional print servers with a secure, scalable Azure platform integrated with Microsoft 365.

As a Software Engineer on the Universal Print team, you will contribute to building and operating production cloud services used by customers around the world. You’ll work closely with experienced engineers in a collaborative, startup‑style team within Microsoft, gaining hands‑on experience across the service lifecycle—from development and testing to deployment and live operation. This role provides strong learning opportunities in backend services, cloud fundamentals, and service reliability while building systems customers depend on every day.

Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, test, and maintain features for a global cloud service with guidance.
  • Contribute to backend services and REST APIs using modern engineering practices.
  • Write high‑quality, maintainable code and accompanying unit tests.
  • Assist with monitoring service health and investigating issues in live environments.
  • Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and team planning activities.
  • Learn and apply security, privacy, and compliance best practices in production services.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline with proven experience coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Academic, internship, or early professional experience writing software in C#/.NET or similar object‑oriented languages.
  • Understanding of RESTful APIs and basic web or service concepts.
  • Familiarity with Git‑based workflows and modern development tools.
  • Foundational knowledge of software quality, including unit testing.

Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Internship or project experience building cloud‑connected or service‑based applications.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms or distributed systems concepts.
  • Exposure to Windows OS internals, system services, or platform components.
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines or automated testing.
  • Interest in operating and improving reliable production services.
