The Red Hat Enterprise Linux team is seeking a Manager of Engineering to lead the Core Platforms Engineering virtualization group, focusing on Linux kernel virtualization (KVM), QEMU, and Libvirt, as well as related firmware, emulation, and management tooling. The role serves as the primary technical focal point for large components of the Linux virtualization stack and collaborates with multiple agile scrum teams and the open source community to influence feature roadmaps. The position requires deep expertise in infrastructure software engineering, security engineering, and distributed systems, and includes mentoring, setting standards, and ensuring long-term quality and enterprise readiness. You will manage a geographically distributed team, drive coaching and career development, and coordinate performance testing roadmaps with product management and engineering teams.
About the Job:
The Red Hat Enterprise Linux team is looking for a Manager, Engineering to join our Core Platforms Engineering group to work on Linux & Container Technologies. The Virtualization team’s work includes core kernel virtualization (KVM) system, firmware and device emulation for storage, memory and networking, its management layer and associated tools, as well as its counterpart aspects in the guest instance on top of Red Hat or third-party virtualized platforms as well as public clouds. The team is responsible for layered solutions with virtualization technologies including openshift virtualization and openstack.
In this role, you will act as the primary technical contact and domain stakeholder for large components of the Linux Virtualization stack (KVM, QEMU, Libvirt) and the Kubernetes ecosystem. You will collaborate and influence the feature roadmaps of multiple agile scrum teams across Red Hat and the broader open source community.
This role requires deep expertise in core infrastructure software engineering, security engineering, and distributed systems. You will be responsible for defining standards, mentoring technical staff, and ensuring the long-term strategic success and quality of our products against complex enterprise requirements.
You will be responsible for a geographically distributed team of engineers, immersing yourself in the day-to-day work of the team, responding to their needs, and facilitating coaching and career development for your engineers.
What you will do?
Serve as a people manager for your team with responsibility for establishing objectives, providing feedback, fostering career development, and providing active coaching of associates
Act as a technical focal point for the team, participate in regular planning and prioritization discussions.
Create, improve, and manage processes, tools, and techniques toward your team’s efficiency and productivity
Work with product management, engineering teams, and other key stakeholders to develop performance testing roadmaps and schedules; communicate these schedules and coordinate delivery
What you will bring?
Experience as a technical manager, building and managing teams
Experience with open source software, Linux, containers, Kubernetes, or Red Hat OpenShift
Understanding of software and hardware performance testing and evaluation
The ability to understand technical requirements and communicate with authority at a technical level
Good written and verbal English communication skills with the ability to interact comfortably with other members of a large, geographically distributed team
Passion for open source software
Ability to communicate with peer managers from various teams to coordinate development and defect resolution efforts related to performance
Experience with agile development tools like Jira and Confluence is a plus
