Red Hat's Core Kernel team is seeking a Senior/Principal Software Engineer to design, implement, and test Linux kernel code with a focus on RHEL kernel stability. The role involves backporting fixes, leading CI/CD pipeline architecture, and building robust test frameworks for scalable validation. You will triage complex system failures, analyze kernel logs, and collaborate in a distributed agile team to support Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases. A strong background in Linux kernel development and automation is required.

About the Job:

Red Hat's Core Kernel team is looking for a Senior Software Engineer / Principal Software Engineer with a deep passion for system-level engineering and low-level operating system components. In this role, your work will influence the direction in a core subsystem of the Linux Kernel. You will be part of a growing team focused on software development and testing that may include both kernel and user space packages.

Most of the work is centered around development and testing of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux kernel. As a Senior or Principal Software Engineer, you will work in this combined software development and testing role within a scrum team, and you will work broadly with teams focused on continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD) that support Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases.

What will you do?

  • Perform design, implementation, review, and testing of Linux kernel code

  • Backport fixes to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) releases

  • Lead the architecture and implementation of continuous integration pipelines using tools like Jenkins.

  • Design, develop, and maintain robust test frameworks ensuring these frameworks are scalable, reliable, and easily consumable by the team.

  • Triage complex system failures. Analyze kernel panics, core dumps, and kernel logs to identify root causes and distinguish between automation issues and product bugs.

  • Communicate and help coordinate dates, deliverables, feature requirements, roadmaps, etc.

  • Work effectively as part of a distributed, agile team with remote members.

What will you bring?

  • Experience developing software using C on Linux

  • Strong proficiency with Python and automated testing technologies such as Jenkins, or equivalent

  • Experience with software testing concepts and frameworks

  • Working experience in linux testing and debugging

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

  • Experience with Git

  • Outstanding problem-solving and collaboration skills

  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and work with minimal supervision

  • Motivated and dedicated to learning

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field; an advanced degree is a plus.
