Define and evolve Vanguard's Future State Data Architecture and Engineering capability for Personal Investor (PI) Technology, aligning data lake, models, and platforms into a scalable intelligence layer. Lead cross-division semantic data modeling and governance for USDI data domains (e.g., Client, Transaction) and define logical/physical architectures to enable APIs, bulk access, and event-driven platforms. Provide senior-level data-architecture thought leadership, coaching, and collaboration with the CTO and CDAO to ensure an AI-ready data strategy and high-quality data. Mentor architects and engineers, participate in governance discussions, and drive special projects aligned with enterprise data priorities.

Define Vanguard’s Future State Data Architecture & Engineering Capability
The Chief Data Architect for Personal Investor (PI) Technology shapes and evolves the data architecture for key US Direct Investor data domains (e.g client, account, transactions) across operational and analytical fields of use as well as future AI-driven capabilities. This role will help align the data lake and engineering function and integrate data models, products, and platforms into a unified and scalable intelligence layer that enables superior client and business outcomes. The architect also partners with senior leaders and architects across sub-divisions to develop data architectures and strategies across Vanguard Business Lines, including Personal Investor, Advice Wealth Management (AWM), and Workplace that enable key enterprise capabilities like One Vanguard Crossover/Rollover and Enterprise Data Architecture strategic priorities.
In this role you will:
- Lead cross-division semantic data modeling and metadata development for key US Direct Investor (USDI) data domains (e.g. Client, Transaction) for operational, AI, and analytical fields of use, considering conceptual and physical data models
- Define and govern the logical and physical data architecture(s) for the USDI platform that enables APIs, bulk access, Supergraph and event-driven platforms, from operations to the lakehouse and unified core data products.
- Advance Data Platform of the Future architecture in coordination with a modern USDI Data & Intelligence Platform
- Lead development and governance of architecture directives and standards across data engineering that result in improved data quality and reliability and enhanced metadata management; creates and maintains best practices and learnings, providing coaching to teams on the strategy.
- Ensure alignment with enterprise AI-Ready Data strategy; coordinate with Vanguard’s Chief Technology Office (CTO) and CDAO to solution for gaps in enabling capabilities
- Explore AI use cases for data engineering and analyst roles; develop technical direction for virtual analyst/generative insights capabilities
- Provide senior-level data architecture thought leadership to Personal Investor Technology Leadership table for the purpose of advancing proposed architecture solutions
- Participate in governance team discussions and provides a strong voice on critical decisions
- Utilize superior leadership skills, especially in the areas of persuasion, influence, conceptual thinking, and problem solving
- Coach and mentor architects, Technical Leads
- Participate in special projects and perform other duties as assigned
Experience & Capabilities:
- Operating in a global environment with cross-site experience
- Deep experience in financial services (preferred), other regulated industries
- Hands-on practitioner of cloud-native data services with AWS (preferred), Azure, or GCP
- Expertise in data modeling, architect activities and processes, including systems and tool utilization, dimensional database design, data modeling, metadata management
- Proven ability to design architecture supporting regulatory reporting and controls.
- Experience enabling analytics and AI through governed, high-quality data.
- Ability to influence senior stakeholders and collaborate across business and technology
Qualifications:
- Minimum of ten years related work experience, with at least eight years of technology architect experience.
- Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of training and experience. Graduate degree preferred.
- AWS certified preferred.
