Payments Data Lead Engineer responsible for engineering excellence across Payments data workflows for the Data as a Service (DaaS) team, combining hands-on data engineering with operational leadership. Drives data provisioning, production readiness, automation, governance alignment, and cross-team coordination to ensure secure, compliant, high-quality data movement. Partners with cross-functional engineering, infrastructure, governance, and controls teams to design scalable data workflows and improve end-to-end data ecosystems.
Join us as Payments Data Lead Engineer where you will be accountable for driving engineering excellence across critical Payments data workflows, ensuring secure, compliant, and high‑quality data movement for Data as a Service (DaaS) team. The role blends deep hands‑on data engineering with strong operational leadership, covering data provisioning, production readiness, automation, governance alignment, and cross‑team coordination. You will partner with cross‑functional engineering, infrastructure, governance, and controls teams while driving automation, strengthening resiliency, and ensuring compliance with internal security, audit, and data‑handling standards. This role combines engineering depth with operational excellence — suitable for someone who can design scalable data workflows, lead complex data operations, and drive improvements across end‑to‑end data ecosystems.
To be successful as a Payments Data Lead Engineer , you should have experience with:
Corporate and Payments domain knowledge in one or more core banking product platforms/systems such as Payment Engines, accounting and clearing, Digital banking, Customer & risk systems, etc.
Knowledge of Payment processing engine (High Value, Low Value), Payment Message Schemes across UK, US, and EU regions (SWIFT, FED, CHIPS, ISO, PAIN, PACS, CHAPS, BACS, FPS etc).
Analyse End-to-End Payments data flows, identify data quality issues, and suggest/implement corrective and preventive controls for straight through processing.
Expertise with hands‑on experience with Oracle Database and PL/SQL based data solutions (procedures, packages, performance tuning) supporting Payments processing, reporting, and downstream consumption.
Having strong working knowledge of Oracle/SQL DB exports/imports, data movement, performance tuning, query optimization, user and schema provisioning, privilege management, and account lifecycle operations.
Strong working knowledge of Linux and Shell scripting for automation, batch processing, job scheduling, monitoring, and incident resolution.
Exposure to Data Masking, Data Anonymisation, or Test Data Management concepts.
Good understanding of Data Governance, GDPR, and data privacy controls.
Support production issues with strong root‑cause analysis and drive long‑term stability improvements.
Own production readiness across data platforms, including monitoring, operational documentation, capacity baselines, and resiliency measures.
Collaborate with engineering, infrastructure, and governance teams to ensure smooth delivery of data initiatives and cross‑domain integrations.

Experience supporting data‑intensive applications in a regulated banking environment.
Drive incident & change management, ensuring strong controls, operational stability, and adherence to organizational standards.
Oversee environment readiness, access provisioning, support models, and service health reporting in line with audit and control expectations.
Provide technical leadership during escalations, ensuring timely resolution and identifying long‑term engineering improvements.
Introduce and scale automation frameworks to reduce manual effort, improve stability, and streamline operational processes.
Experience with GitLab or similar version control / CI‑CD tools, with ability to work in Agile delivery models.

Purpose of the role
To build and maintain the systems that collect, store, process, and analyse data, such as data pipelines, data warehouses and data lakes to ensure that all data is accurate, accessible, and secure.
Accountabilities
- Build and maintenance of data architectures pipelines that enable the transfer and processing of durable, complete and consistent data.
- Design and implementation of data warehoused and data lakes that manage the appropriate data volumes and velocity and adhere to the required security measures.
- Development of processing and analysis algorithms fit for the intended data complexity and volumes.
- Collaboration with data scientist to build and deploy machine learning models.
