Moody's is seeking a Software Engineer (Data Engineer) to design, build, and optimize secure, high-performance databases and data pipelines for analytics, applications, and risk platforms. The role requires 3-5 years of hands-on experience in software/data engineering, strong SQL and programming skills, experience with cloud data services, and familiarity with data modeling, ETL/ELT pipelines, and data security. The candidate will collaborate with software engineers, data scientists, and product teams to deliver reliable, production-ready data solutions and contribute to system reliability and continuous improvement. This position operates within Moody's finance/risk analytics environment and involves platforms such as Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server.

At Moody's, we unite the brightest minds to turn today’s risks into tomorrow’s opportunities. We do this by striving to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome to be who they are—with the freedom to exchange ideas, think innovatively, and listen to each other and customers in meaningful ways. Moody’s is transforming how the world sees risk. As a global leader in ratings and integrated risk assessment, we’re advancing AI to move from insight to action—enabling intelligence that not only understands complexity but responds to it. We decode risk to unlock opportunity, helping our clients navigate uncertainty with clarity, speed, and confidence.

If you are excited about this opportunity but do not meet every single requirement, please apply! You still may be a great fit for this role or other open roles. We are seeking candidates who model our values: invest in every relationship, lead with curiosity, champion diverse perspectives, turn inputs into actions, and uphold trust through integrity.

Skills and Competencies

  • 3–5 years of hands-on experience as a Software Engineer, Data Engineer, or Database Engineer, building and supporting production-grade data systems.
  • Expert SQL skills with strong proficiency in Python, Java, C#, or Scala, required to design and optimize high performance backend and data solutions.
  • Solid experience with relational databases including PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Oracle, and Snowflake, and NoSQL databases such as MongoDB, Cassandra, or DynamoDB.
  • Hands-on experience working with cloud data services on Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Strong understanding of database design, data modeling, indexing, partitioning, and query optimization techniques.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross functional engineering, analytics, and product teams.
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes for containerized data platforms.
  • Knowledge of data modeling methodologies such as Star Schema and Data Vault.
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure as code using Terraform or CloudFormation.
  • Familiarity with data quality, monitoring, and observability tools.

Education

  • Bachelor’s / Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology or relevant stream.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and optimize secure, high performance databases and data pipelines supporting analytics, applications, and risk platforms.
  • Design and develop high performance SQL and NoSQL database schemas supporting analytics, backend applications, and data science workloads.
  • Optimize database performance through query tuning, indexing strategies, partitioning, and configuration improvements.
  • Build and maintain scalable ETL / ELT pipelines to ingest, transform, and validate structured and unstructured data.
  • Integrate internal and external systems using APIs and cloud data platforms such as Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server.
  • Implement data security and governance best practices, including encryption, identity and access management, and compliance with GDPR and CCPA.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, data scientists, and product teams to deliver reliable, production ready data solutions.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve data and performance issues, contributing to system reliability and continuous improvement.
