We are seeking a Data Engineer to design, build, and maintain distributed data pipelines for ESG and fund-related datasets using PySpark, Databricks, and BigQuery. You will ensure data quality, platform stability, and scalable delivery of ESG scoring data, troubleshoot data discrepancies, and collaborate with Research, Product, and Engineering to implement methodology-driven platform features. You will lead incident triage and root-cause analysis for data and platform issues, document workflows and scoring logic, and contribute to automation and modernization initiatives across the ESG data ecosystem.

Your Team Responsibilities

Our team is responsible for building and maintaining the Fund ESG Ratings platform, a business-critical component that powers MSCI’s ESG offerings at the fund level. We manage the end-to-end lifecycle of fund-level ESG data—from ingestion, transformation, and scoring, to final delivery to internal consumers and external clients.

Key responsibilities of the team include:

Designing scalable data pipelines using Databricks, PySpark, and BigQuery.

Supporting regulatory-compliant ESG scoring and reporting logic.

Partnering with ESG Research and Index teams to translate methodology changes into platform features.

Ensuring data quality, platform stability, and SLA adherence.

Driving automation and modernization across the ESG data ecosystem.

Your Key Responsibilities

Develop and maintain distributed data pipelines for ESG and fund-related datasets using PySpark and Databricks.

Perform complex SQL-based transformations in BigQuery and manage data models that support scoring, audit, and delivery.

Analyze ESG scoring results and troubleshoot data discrepancies or platform issues.

Collaborate with stakeholders from Research, Product, and Engineering to deliver enhancements aligned with evolving ESG methodologies.

Lead the incident triage, root cause analysis, and issue resolution for data and platform anomalies.

Document workflows, scoring logic, and data flows for internal transparency and audit-readiness.

Contribute to team-wide initiatives for automation, quality monitoring, and platform scalability.

Your skills and experience that will help you excel

Advanced proficiency in Databricks and PySpark for large-scale data processing.

Strong command over SQL, with experience in BigQuery or equivalent distributed databases.

Comfort working with structured and semi-structured datasets (JSON, Parquet, etc.).

Hands-on experience in designing, deploying, and maintaining data pipelines in cloud-native environments.

Analytical and Domain Skills
Strong data analysis skills to investigate anomalies, validate scoring logic, and derive insights from ESG fund data.

Exposure to ESG concepts or financial products like mutual funds, ETFs, and indices (preferred but not mandatory).

Ability to translate business rules into technical logic and validation mechanisms.

Soft Skills and Collaboration
Problem-solving mindset with strong debugging and root cause analysis skills.

Excellent communication and documentation abilities to work across global, cross-functional teams.

Self-driven, proactive attitude with ownership of critical workflows and timelines.
