Senior Data Engineer - Dataverse Team

The role / impact

As a Senior Data Engineer, you will be at the forefront of engineering sophisticated, large-scale data solutions that enable informed decision-making across Xero. You will design and evolve multi-layered data models on Snowflake, ensuring performance and reliability for the enterprise data warehouse and standardised business models that thousands of internal users rely on.

This role is about more than just technical expertise; you will be a key contributor to developing new data capabilities and services while enhancing existing solutions. Your work will bridge the gap between ingestion and business-friendly dimensions, collaborating directly with teams in Finance, Product, and Revenue Operations to unlock self-serve and AI-driven analytics.

The team / how they connect

You will join the Dataverse pod, a specialised group of 15 within the wider Data Platforms and Engineering organisation. The team is responsible for building foundational data models to support company-wide reporting needs, operating in a collaborative environment with colleagues primarily based in New Zealand.

The team is currently working on / Initially, you will focus on

• Engineering robust data pipelines and processes using dbt and Snowflake to support complex analytics.

• Automating workflows and managing infrastructure with Python, DevOps patterns, and Terraform.

• Bringing new data sources into the warehouse and standardising patterns to retire legacy reporting platforms.

• Responding to incidents and providing pragmatic support to keep critical analytics running smoothly.

Where and how you can work

This is a fixed-term position until 12th October, based in New Zealand. We offer a hybrid working arrangement that balances the flexibility of remote work with purposeful "boost days" in the office to foster connection and collaboration.

• You bring deep expertise in designing data pipelines and engineering processes for large-scale data sets.

• Your toolkit includes a strong software engineering mindset with proficiency in Python and SQL to automate CI/CD pipelines.

• You possess a thorough understanding of data modelling and dimensional modelling techniques.

• Practical experience with modern tools such as Terraform and Jenkins helps you build reliable infrastructure.

• You have a natural ability to gather requirements from business owners and translate them into technical documentation.

• A solution-focused approach allows you to remain diligent and self-organised when tackling complex data problems.
