Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Auckland. But you have choice in where and how you work, we trust our Canvanauts to choose the balance that empowers them and their team to achieve their goals.

What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

This role will see you:

• Leading and growing a high-performing team of backend and machine learning engineers

• Evolving the search architecture that connects users with the perfect template for their next project

• Delivering measurable improvements to search quality across surfaces like homepage and query-based discovery

• Collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver end-to-end user improvements

• Setting the technical direction for search ranking, experimentation, and platform evolution

• Ensuring excellence in engineering culture, on-call health, and stakeholder alignment

• You’ve led technical teams in complex domains like search, ranking, or machine learning

• You’re passionate about building inclusive, high-performing engineering cultures

• You’re skilled at navigating ambiguity and technical trade-offs in fast-paced environments

• You communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders

• You have strong system-level thinking and a curiosity to understand how things work under the hood

The Template Search Quality team sits within the Discovery Group at Canva. We build the systems that help millions of users find the perfect starting point for their next creation. From ranking pipelines to experimentation frameworks, the team ensures our users see the most relevant, high-quality templates for their needs—across styles, formats, languages, and regions. This team plays a critical role in Canva’s success by empowering users to go from idea to publish with confidence and creativity.
