As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer in Canva's Learning Experience group, you will build, test, and ship ML-powered features that enhance learning experiences. You’ll design scalable ML pipelines in collaboration with platform teams, and work closely with product managers, designers and engineers to align on user needs. You’ll run experiments to validate assumptions, contribute to shared ML infrastructure and best practices, and stay up-to-date with state-of-the-art developments to apply at scale. The role focuses on discovering curriculum-aligned content, AI workflows for teachers, and generative capabilities integrated into Canva workflows.

Join the team redefining how the world experiences design.

Hey, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora,你好, hallo, vítejte!

Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point.

Where and how you can work

Our flagship campus is in Sydney, with a second campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, and Auckland, NZ. You have flexibility in how and where you work — whether that's from one of our spaces, from home, or a mix of both. This role is remote-friendly within Australia or New Zealand, so you can choose the setup that empowers you and your team to do your best work.

About the Group/Team

This year, the Learning Experience group's mission is to ignite creativity in every learner by being fun and accessible, saving teachers and course creators time, and looking after every learner, whether in school, on campus, or in the workplace. We want to continue evolving Canva into a best-in-class learning tool, so that we have a sticky product with better retention.

In 2026, our Engaging Learning team is making it dramatically easier for teachers to save time through two core capabilities: discovering curriculum-aligned content that's ready to use in the classroom, and AI workflows tailored to their specific teaching tasks. We're building discovery systems that surface the right content for each teacher's curriculum context, and generation capabilities that understand educational standards while integrating seamlessly into their existing workflows.

About the Role/Specialty

We’re the Learning Experience group within Teams and Education, on a mission to ignite creativity in every learner. We’re building seamless learning pathways for users of all kinds—students, teachers, teams—across the globe. We thrive at the intersection of education and technology, driving impact by building experiences that empower learners to grow through Canva.

What you’ll do (responsibilities)

  • You’ll build, test, and ship ML-powered features that enhance learning experiences

  • You’ll design scalable ML pipelines in collaboration with our platform teams

  • You’ll work closely with PMs, designers and engineers to align on user needs and product direction

  • You’ll run experiments to validate assumptions and improve model effectiveness

  • You’ll contribute to shared ML infrastructure and best practices at Canva

  • You’ll keep up with state-of-the-art developments and explore ways to apply them at scale

What we're looking for

You're a highly skilled machine learning engineer with a proven track record of delivering ML-powered product features in production. You bring deep technical expertise across the ML lifecycle—from data wrangling and model development to evaluation, deployment, and monitoring. You're comfortable operating independently while collaborating deeply with cross-functional teams, and you're motivated by user impact and product outcomes.

  • Demonstrated experience building and deploying ML-powered features in production environments

  • Proficiency with Python and frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch

  • Skilled across the ML lifecycle: data processing, model training, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring

  • Proven ability to work independently while collaborating cross-functionally with product, design, and data

  • Experience with Generative AI (GenAI): LLMs, diffusion models, prompt engineering, RAG, or fine-tuning

  • Familiarity with GenAI platforms (e.g. OpenAI, Hugging Face, Anthropic) and embedding-based systems

  • Strong product mindset – prioritises ML solutions that improve user experience and product outcomes

  • Committed to scalable, maintainable ML systems with clear metrics and impact tracking

  • Passionate about ethical ML and responsible data usage, especially in learning environments

  • Enjoys mentoring and sharing best practices within the team
