We are currently seeking a high caliber professional to join our team as Regional Head of Wholesale Portfolio Analytics.

Role Purpose

The role reports to the Head of Global Risk Analytics, Asia & Middle East. The job holder is responsible for leading the regional portfolio analytics team for Asia Pacific in the successful delivery of IRB, Stress Test, IFRS9 and Climate Risk/ESG related analytics, for the relevant Wholesale Credit portfolios.

From a regional perspective, the role is responsible for:

  • developing regional wholesale credit risk IRB, Stress Test, IFRS9 and Climate Risk/ESG models
  • providing analytical support to the regional IFRS9 Expected Credit Loss (”ECL”) execution and to all the relevant Group, Regional and Country-level Stress Test exercises, including the Climate Risk/ESG ones, for the relevant portfolios
  • overseeing the accurate execution and regional approval of Economic Capital models for relevant credit risk portfolios and providing the related credit risk analytical support and inputs to the regional ICAAP execution
  • taking the lead in models’ methodology in the region, particular on methodological related discussions around IFRS/ST/Climate Risk analytics and models.
  • supporting the development of global standards on model development and validation for these models. ensuring regionally developed and implemented models align with the Group modeling standards
  • managing material model risks (IMR / Audit findings)
  • representing GRA and HSBC in Stress Test, IFRS9 and Climate Risk/ESG models related methodological discussions in regulatory, industry, academic and internal senior management forums

The role will also develop close partnership with wholesale impairment, wholesale stress testing, regulatory reporting and financial reporting in IFRS9, ST and Climate Risk/ESG exercises.

Principal Accountabilities

Impact on the Business/Function

  • Lead the analysis, development and coordination with customer groups in Wholesale, Product Groups, Group Risks, Regional Finance and regulators on the review and development of IRB, Stress Test, IFRS9 and Climate Risk/ESG models
  • Manage the development and monitoring of risk policies, processes and tools that facilitate risk-based business management
  • Management of research, review, formulation and revision of Stress Test, IFRS9 and Climate Risk/ESG policies and guidelines
  • On-going surveillance of the regulatory policy trends and emerging industry practices to identify potential threats to the bank

Customers / Stakeholders

  • Engage proactively with senior stakeholders in Risk, Business, and Finance in the ECL impact projection, management, as well as rationalization of adjustments as required.
  • Support the interaction with customer groups, wholesale impairment and wholesale stress testing to ensure understanding of credit risk IRB, Stress Test, IFRS9 and Climate Risk/ESG models
  • Involve in the interaction with internal and external auditors, regulators and industry bodies on IRB, Stress Test, IFRS9 and Climate Risk/ESG matters
  • Manage monitoring the implementation progress of internal audit and IMR recommendations

Leadership & Teamwork

  • Be part of a management team in ensuring GRA is managed to our risk appetite
  • Manage and develop a team of modellers, ensuring appropriate levels of technical expertise and engagement skills
  • Effective communication with both GRA and the broader Risk teams at both Regional and Group levels ensures there is a strong common understanding of the risk models and that best practices are being applied
  • Champion for accuracy in risk measurement and appropriate of risk models within the group
  • Carve out a leadership position in the industry discussion which can be used to shape industry position in line with our own

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree or other advanced degree in a quantitative or technical field
  • Expert knowledge of IRB, Stress Test and IFRS9 analytics, or the majority of these areas if not all.
  • Strong knowledge of HSBC systems which impact RWA, Stress Test, Economic Capital and Provision and compliance calculations
  • Excellent communication, influencing and interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with key players in industry and regulators with aim of influencing policy decisions in order to protects banks interests
  • History of working in a role of similar complexity, with a verifiable track record
  • Proven leadership experience and the gravitas and ability to build connections and work collaboratively across boundaries and to provide sound counsel to senior leaders of HSBC
  • Resourceful, creative and inquisitive approach to dealing with high levels of complexity and ambiguity
  • Highly motivated, entrepreneurial and autonomous, with the sensibility to manage priorities and negotiate under pressure
  • Proven ability to formulate, disseminate and implement firm-wide strategic initiatives
  • Able to operate effectively against uncertainty and on unfamiliar ground
  • Ability to identify and assess risk trends, both internally and externally
  • Ability to assess the overall effectiveness of model systems through the combination of statistical measures and an assessment of the overall conceptual soundness of the approach and result
  • Ability to clearly explain technical model details to senior management and other areas of the bank in non-technical business language
  • Experience with managing a team from varying background, some with highly specialised skills and develop and retain key, marketable individuals
