Join Duolingo as an iOS engineer on the Math team to build iOS features that help learners develop core math skills. You will develop, release, and maintain native iOS applications in Swift, collaborate with design and backend teams, and mentor junior engineers while setting technical direction. The role spans multiple areas including Short Form and Video Call Experience, focusing on scalable, well-designed mobile experiences. Strong Swift proficiency and API design are valued, along with multithreaded programming and unit testing.

Our mission at Duolingo is to develop the best education in the world and make it universally available. It’s a big mission, and that’s where you come in!

At Duolingo, you’ll join a team that cares about finding innovative solutions to complex technical problems, running countless experiments (300+ at a time!) with our massive user base to make data-driven decisions, and educating our users and employees alike. You’ll have limitless learning opportunities, mentorship and collaboration with world-class minds, and a variety of projects with large scopes — while doing work that’s both fun and meaningful.

Join our life-changing mission to develop education for our half a billion (and growing!) learners around the world.

About the role

Math Team

As an iOS engineer on the Math team, you will help build the technology that changes how people around the world learn Math. The features that you ship will help learners to develop core math skills in a fun, engaging way. We’re looking for engineers who love building new products and features.

Short Form Area:

As an iOS engineer in the Short Form Area, you'll build features that make up the core of the learning experience on Duolingo. Our short-form lessons are where learners spend the majority of their time on the app, and our area's mission is to make these sessions more effective and engaging. You'll work on adding new exercises that support our learners in practicing skills like recall and production in bite-sized formats, as well as creating other ways to help learners build foundational skills in a new language. We're looking for engineers who are passionate about improving how we teach.

Video Call Experience Team:

The Video Call Experience team is responsible for both the technical foundation and product roadmap for Duolingo's Video Call product — a core feature that allows users to bridge the speaking & listening gap in their language learning journey. You'll architect robust infrastructure while creating engaging user experiences, working closely with design and product partners. We're looking for engineers who champion solid system design and find excitement in working with cross-functional partners to make language learning more fun and accessible.

:brain:  You will...

  • Collaborate on software projects with product design and backend aspects

  • Experience designing clean and maintainable APIs
  • Experience with multithreaded programming
  • Experience writing unit tests and testable code
  • Knowledge of iOS SDK performance tools and optimization techniques
