IMC seeks a Java Software Engineer to build high-performance trading and risk applications, working end-to-end within multidisciplinary teams alongside traders, researchers and quants. You will design, code, test, deploy and maintain production systems, prioritizing latency, throughput, scalability and maintainability. The role requires strong Java (11+) skills, familiarity with Docker/Kubernetes and Linux, and the ability to gather requirements from internal stakeholders and own greenfield projects. Occasional travel to IMC's Chicago office may be required, so ESTA/VWP eligibility is mandated.
At IMC, technology is not a department; it’s at the heart of everything we do. Developed in house, our innovative software makes millions of trading decisions daily, and we win by making better and faster decisions than our competition.
IMC’s Amsterdam-based Java teams work on a wide variety of applications, tools and functionalities, including trading algorithm implementations, option pricing, calculating volatility, simulation frameworks, market risk applications, trade reconciliation applications and data analysis & visualisation tools for traders. We frequently need to develop not just the business applications themselves, but also the tools that keep our development process at the cutting edge.
Your Core Responsibilities:
As a software engineer, you’ll work in multidisciplinary teams alongside other engineers as well as traders researchers and quants to deliver challenging projects, while taking ownership for end-to-end product development – from requirements gathering to production. You’ll write reliable, high-performance software while balancing time to production with quality and testability. Advanced automated testing and daily deployments will allow you to achieve agile and incremental benefits. Within a complex landscape of varying systems and technologies, you’ll be constantly challenged to consider trade-offs between latency, throughput, simplicity, scalability and maintainability. Your core tasks will include:
- Coding, developing, testing, deploying and maintaining applications and automations for Trading Teams and/or Risk Management, Mid-Office and Strategy Development Teams.
- Working through internal client requests. Gathering details, requirements and feedback from a range of internal stakeholders in order to implement creative automation solutions using innovative coding practices.
Your Skills and Experience:
- At least > 5 years of experience as a Software Engineer
- Strong programming skills in Java 11+. Experience in the latest versions of Java is highly desirable
- Familiarity with Python – preferred
- Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes
- Comfortable in Linux environments
- Experience gathering business requirements, communicating with key stakeholders and delivering solutions quickly
- The ability able to work on greenfield projects under minimal supervision and to take full ownership of the applications you build
- A high degree of flexibility and adaptability: willing and able to deal with uncertainty and ambiguity in a rapidly evolving environment
- Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills; ability to solve problems creatively and proactively
- Prior knowledge of trading / capital markets is not required. Curiosity and a willingness to learn is.
- Must be eligible for ESTA and US Visa Waiver Program (VWP), as occasional travel to IMC's Chicago office on relatively short notice may be required
Our tech stack includes an ever-evolving range of systems and technologies, and our engineers have the freedom to choose the best solution for the problem at hand. If a new technology has the potential to add value, we’ll actively invest in exploring, adopting and developing it.
