Software engineering role on the Equity Derivatives Scenarios team responsible for developing, maintaining and running overnight calculation applications used by equity derivatives trading desks. The role focuses on core Java (performance and concurrency), Spring/Spring Boot, scripting on Linux, and cloud (AWS/Azure), and includes level 3 support responsibilities and work with Q/KDB+.

The candidate will be part of the Equity Derivatives Scenarios team. The scenarios team is responsible for developing, maintaining and running applications for several overnight calculations to downstream market risk systems and used by equity derivatives trading desks. The Equity Derivatives Systems are required to meet the demands stemming from regulatory changes and the expansion of electronic trading of derivatives set against a backdrop of rapidly evolving global economic conditions.


The ideal candidate will demonstrate an eagerness to learn and improve the existing platforms, which are built using a variety of technologies including core Java, Q/KDB+ and AWS, be proactive in designing and building systems to meet business demands. The candidate will also be able to handle competing demands including both tactical and strategic initiatives, manage their own work to aggressive deadlines (with help from their manager). The role includes level 3 support responsibilities.


What you’ll bring to the role:

  • Strong technical background, including Object Oriented Design and knowledge of core Java with the focus on performance and concurrency

  • Spring/Spring Boot

  • Experience with scripting languages such as python, ksh and/or bash on Linux

  • Experience with AWS/Azure

  • Problem solving ability

  • Strong communication skills

Skills Desired:

  • Familiarity/experience with distributed systems

  • Familiarity with Q/KDB+

  • OpenTelemetry

  • Gradle

  • Familiarity with git and forking workflow

  • Familiarity with risk systems

  • Familiarity with equity derivatives or financial instruments in general

  • Ability to discuss and refine requirements with users, convert those requirements into a design and build a solution to meet that design

Expected base pay rates for the role will be between $90,000 and $150,000 per year at the commencement of employment. However, base pay if hired will be determined on an individualized basis and is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, other short and long-term incentive packages, and other Morgan Stanley sponsored benefit programs.
