Join our Loyalty and Service Team and advance your career as a Senior Software Engineer/Technical lead (JavaScript)
At bp, we aim to shape the future of mobility, energy, and services through innovative business models and service platforms. Serving millions of customers at over 20,000 fuel sites and convenience stores worldwide, and a rapidly expanding network of electric vehicle charging points, our Technology team collaborates with global EV businesses to deliver products that enhance customer experience and drive business value.
As Senior Software Engineer you will be a key contributor to designing, building, and operating scalable services within a distributed, integration-heavy platform, while also guiding other engineers through code reviews, technical decisions, and delivery standards.
We are looking for a candidate with strong JavaScript expertise who will act as a technical leader for one of our core platform teams. This role combines hands-on engineering with technical leadership, system ownership, and close collaboration with product, architecture, and external vendors.
This is not a pure people-management role, but you are expected to lead technically and act as a go-to person for your domain. The ideal candidate will be a senior engineer who still wants to code but also wants influence. Experience as a de-facto tech lead, even if the title was not formal. Comfortable working in complex, real-world systems, not greenfield only. A strong professional who values clarity, ownership, and accountability.
In this role You will:
Technical Leadership
Act as technical lead for a squad or domain within the platform.
Own technical decisions, architecture trade-offs, and implementation approaches
Drive engineering protocols (code quality, testing, observability, security)
Review designs and code, providing constructive and pragmatic guidance
Mentor mid-level and senior engineers; support junior engineers when needed
Software Engineering
Design, develop, and maintain JavaScript-based backend services (Node.js)
Build scalable, resilient APIs and integration layers
Work with event-driven and asynchronous architectures
Ensure production readiness: monitoring, logging, alerting, and performance tuning
Participate in on-call rotations and support production issues when required
Architecture & Platform Work
Contribute to service architecture, domain boundaries, and API contracts
Work closely with architects and other technical leads on cross-team initiatives
Ensure systems meet non-functional requirements (availability, latency, security)
Support gradual refactoring and modernization of existing services
Collaboration & Delivery
Partner closely with Product Managers and Business Analysts to shape solutions
Coordinate technical dependencies with other teams and external vendors
Support planning, estimation, and risk identification
Translate business requirements into clear technical execution plans
What You will need to be successful:
Many years of professional software engineering experience
Strong proficiency in JavaScript and Node.js
Experience building backend services and APIs in production environments
Solid understanding of distributed systems and service-based architecture
Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS preferred)
Strong knowledge of REST APIs, authentication/authorization, and data modeling
Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and code-quality tools
Proven ability to lead technically within a team or project
Previous experience as a Technical Lead, Team Lead, or Senior Engineer with ownership responsibilities
Comfortable making decisions with incomplete information
Able to balance delivery pressure with long-term maintainability
Desirable Criteria:
Experience with event streaming (e.g., Kafka, SNS/SQS, EventBridge)
Familiarity with microservices and serverless architecture
Experience in integration-heavy platforms
Exposure to vendor-led or outsourced development models
Knowledge of TypeScript
Experience operating services on a scale (multi-region, multi-market systems)

Different bonus opportunities based on performance, wide range of cafeteria elements

Opportunity to build up long-term career path and develop your skills with wide range of learning options
