Senior Full Stack Engineer on Vanguard's Financial Well-Being team, building scalable full-stack solutions and AI-enabled experiences that power retirement planning and personalized guidance. You will develop modern web applications and backend services (REST/GraphQL) hosted on AWS, collaborating with product, design, and data teams. You will apply Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), AI governance, and observability practices to ensure secure, reliable, and maintainable systems, while mentoring teammates and contributing to engineering culture. Own end-to-end delivery from design through production support and continuous improvement, and leverage AI-assisted tools to accelerate delivery.
As a Senior Full Stack Engineer, you will drive innovation by building and owning scalable full stack solutions across modern web applications, GraphQL enabled APIs, and AWS hosted services that power retirement goal planning, account aggregation, and personalized financial guidance including AI-enabled experiences such as an AI-powered chat/virtual assistant.
Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and own end‑to‑end full stack solutions supporting Financial Well‑Being and retirement planning experiences at scale.
- Develop modern, participant facing web applications alongside scalable backend services architected for cloud and distributed environments.
- Translate product vision and complex financial requirements into well architected, secure, and maintainable technical solutions.
- Lead technical design and implementation, balancing usability, performance, scalability, and long‑term sustainability.
- Integrate with internal platforms and third‑party systems to enable account aggregation, data enrichment, and personalized financial guidance.
- Design and deliver AI-enabled features, including conversational and decision support experiences (e.g., AI-powered chat).
- Apply Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG) and related patterns to connect AI capabilities with trusted data sources, APIs, and knowledge bases.
- Implement appropriate AI governance and controls, including prompt and data management, access controls, auditability, and alignment with enterprise security, privacy, and responsible AI policies.
- Establish monitoring and observability for both traditional and AI‑enabled services to ensure reliability, performance, and continuous improvement.
- Own services and features end‑to‑end from design and development through production support and continuous improvement.
- Leverage AI‑assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) and modern engineering practices to accelerate delivery, improve code quality, and reduce repetitive work.
- Partner closely with product managers, designers, and engineers to deliver intuitive, high‑quality experiences with strong UI craftsmanship.
- Contribute to a strong engineering culture through mentoring, design, and code reviews, and raising the overall technical bar.
Qualifications:
- Strong proficiency with modern web frameworks such as Angular or React, using TypeScript/JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
- Experience building API‑driven systems, including REST and GraphQL, with attention to schema design, versioning, and security.
- Hands‑on experience developing and running applications on AWS, with familiarity across compute, storage, networking, and IAM.
- Solid foundation in cloud‑native and distributed systems, including performance, resiliency, and observability concepts.
- Proficiency with automated testing practices, including TDD, unit testing, and integration/API testing.
- Experience integrating AI/LLM capabilities into applications (e.g., chat, summarization, or decision‑support features).
- Understanding of AI governance and responsible‑AI practices, including data handling, access controls, and security considerations.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tooling.
- Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub-Copilot) and a strong desire to use them to accelerate delivery and improve code quality.
- Strong collaboration skills and experience working in product‑centric, agile teams alongside product managers and designers.
- Minimum of five years related work experience, with at least one year of development experience.
- Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of training and experience.
