The Controls Integration Engineer is responsible for on-site deployment, integration, and commissioning of automated material handling equipment such as sorters, conveyors, and automated work cells. The role focuses on hands-on execution, bringing up IPCs, PLCs, HMIs, industrial networks, and field devices, while acting as the technical authority on-site and coordinating with contractors, system integrators, vendors, and internal teams to ensure safe, reliable deployment per project standards. Responsibilities include commissioning plans, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and supporting handover to operations, with a focus on continuous improvement and deployment efficiency.

The Controls Integration Engineer is responsible for the on-site deployment, integration, and commissioning of automated material handling equipment such as sorters, conveyor systems, and Automated work cells. This role is highly execution-focused and hands-on, owning the technical bring-up of Industrial PCs (IPCs), PLCs, industrial networks, and field devices during installation and commissioning phases.
The engineer serves as a technical authority on-site, partnering closely with contractors, system integrators, vendors, and internal engineering teams to ensure systems are installed, tested, and commissioned safely, reliably, and in accordance with project standards and operational requirements.



Key job responsibilities
Deployment & Commissioning
• Execute on-site commissioning activities for sorters, conveyors, and automated work cells.
• Provision, configure, and validate Linux-based IPCs, PLCs, HMIs, industrial networks, and field devices per project standards.
• Perform I/O checkouts, network validation, and phased system bring-up activities.
• Execute commissioning and test plans, including sequencing, dependencies, and acceptance criteria.
• Support dry runs, functional testing, and integrated system testing through startup and handover.
Troubleshooting & Technical Support
• Serve as the primary on-site technical resource for controls, networking, and system integration issues.
• Diagnose and resolve industrial networking problems (e.g., IP conflicts, VLAN issues, switch configuration, fieldbus communication faults).
• Troubleshoot PLC logic, device configuration, safety interlocks, and system-level faults across electrical, controls, and mechanical boundaries.
• Perform structured root-cause analysis and support implementation of permanent corrective actions.
• Document issues, resolutions, and lessons learned to support continuous improvement and future deployments.
On-Site Technical Leadership
• Provide day-to-day technical direction to technicians, electricians, and commissioning support personnel during system deployment.
• Coordinate closely with system integrators, OEMs, and internal stakeholders to resolve technical issues and unblock progress.
• Ensure compliance with safety requirements, quality standards, and commissioning best practices during installation and testing.
Integration & Handover
• Validate equipment functionality against design specifications, controls standards, and operational requirements.
• Support integration of equipment into Warehouse Control Systems (WCS) and higher-level orchestration layers.
• Participate in turnover activities, ensuring systems are stable, documented, and ready for operational ownership.
Continuous Improvement
• Identify opportunities to improve commissioning efficiency, reliability, and repeatability.
• Contribute to the development and refinement of commissioning tools, test procedures, and deployment standards.
• Provide feedback to design and integration teams to improve future system designs and deployment outcomes.

Basic Qualifications

- Experience with networking fundamentals including hands-on experience with load balancers, switches, routers, etc.
- Willingness to travel up to 50% for on-site commissioning and deployment support.
- Hands-on experience with industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Profinet, EtherCAT, or Modbus TCP.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, Ruby
- Familiarity with object-oriented programming concepts in an IEC 61131-3 environment (e.g., structured function blocks, reusable control architectures).
- Experience supporting large-scale commissioning projects such as automated warehouses, conveyor and sorter systems, or complex manufacturing environments.
