Summer 2026 Internship – Backend Search Engineering Intern

The internship is finalized through a tripartite agreement between the selected student, their university and Dow Jones. We recommend that you check with your university that you are eligible to complete this internship as a part of your degree/program before application.

About the Role:

We are looking for a curious and driven person to join our team as a Backend Search Engineering Intern. As a member of the Dow Jones Development team, you will contribute to building and enhancing our backend search capabilities, focusing on cutting-edge technologies like semantic and lexical search, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) based summarization, prompt engineering and MCP integrations. You'll work on improving how our users discover and understand critical information. This role provides a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in applying advanced search and NLP techniques to real-world challenges. You will collaborate with experienced engineers, learn about our technology stack, and make meaningful contributions to a platform serving millions of users. You Will:

  • Collaborate with engineers to design, develop, and optimize backend search components and APIs.

  • Implement and evaluate different semantic and lexical search algorithms to improve search relevance and accuracy.

  • Contribute to the development of RAG-based summarization systems to provide concise and informative summaries of search results.

  • Experiment with prompt engineering techniques to fine-tune large language models (LLMs) for search-related tasks.

  • Analyze search query logs and user behavior to identify areas for improvement and optimization.

  • Participate in code reviews, testing, and debugging to ensure high-quality deliverables.

  • Learn about new technologies in search, NLP, and machine learning, and be able to present potential applications to the team.

  • Contribute to improving code development standards for our backend search applications and services.

  • Be able to prioritize and manage work, adhering to project timelines in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment

You Have:

  • Completed at least two years towards your Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.

  • Familiarity with Java and Python and experience with relevant java frameworks (spring boot, jUnit, google Guava) and python libraries (NumPy, Pandas, or Scikit-learn)

  • Basic understanding of search algorithms and information retrieval principles.

  • Exposure to Natural Language Processing (NLP) concepts, such as tokenization, stemming, and word embeddings.

  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) and collaborative development workflows.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proactive attitude and willingness to learn and contribute to a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies and tools.

  • Exposure to cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud, Azure), containerization (e.g., Docker), and large language models is a plus.

  • Experience with vector databases (e.g. Pinecone, Milvus) is a plus
