The Power Analyst develops and maintains short-, medium- and long-term fundamental market views across North American power markets (e.g., ERCOT, PJM, MISO, WECC). The role integrates supply-demand fundamentals, weather, transmission and fuel dynamics to produce price forecasts, scenario analyses and tradable themes that inform trading and asset dispatch. Responsibilities include building fundamental models, automating reports and dashboards (Python, SQL, Power BI) and collaborating with quantitative analysts and traders. The analyst will translate complex analysis into concise market commentary and support valuation/model calibration for structured deals.

Job Title:

Job Description:

Power Fundamental Analyst

Location: Houston, Texas
Department: Gas/Power Fundamentals
Reports to: Head of Gas and Power Fundamentals

Role Overview

The Power Fundamental Analyst provides analytical and market research to develop and maintain short-, medium-, and long-term market views across key North American power markets (e.g., ERCOT, PJM, MISO, WECC). The analyst will integrate supply-demand fundamentals, weather, transmission, and fuel market dynamics to generate actionable insights that inform trading strategies, asset dispatch, and portfolio positioning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain fundamental models for load, generation, renewables, transmission, and fuel dynamics across major ISOs. Monitor and forecast supply/demand balances, reserve margins, congestion, and price formation drivers.

  • Analyze generation stack evolution (retirements, additions, outages) and transmission constraints impacting nodal and zonal prices. Develop and continuously refine short- and long-term price forecasts (DA, RT, monthly, seasonal, and forward strips).

  • Translate fundamental outlooks into tradable themes and relative value ideas. Quantify sensitivities (e.g., weather, gas prices, renewables output, load growth) on forward curves and spreads.

  • Produce concise market commentaries and scenario analyses ahead of key decisions.

  • Gather, clean, and manage large datasets from public and proprietary sources. Automate recurring reports and dashboards in Python, SQL, or Power BI to improve decision speed.

  • Collaborate with quantitative analysts to bridge fundamental and statistical models. Support calibration of internal valuation models used for structured deals, tolls, and HRCOs.

  • Work closely with spec and asset traders, to align market views and exposures.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Finance, Economics, Data Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, or related quantitative discipline.

  • Experience: 2–6 years of relevant experience in energy markets, trading analytics, or power system operations.

  • Technical Skills:

    • Strong analytical and quantitative modeling skills.

    • Proficiency in Excel, Python, and SQL.

    • Experience with power market datasets (e.g., ISO data portals, EIA, SNL, Genscape, ABB/Velocity Suite, Yes Energy).

    • Understanding of nodal markets, congestion drivers, and fuel-power relationships (spark spreads, heat rates).

    • Familiarity with optimal power flow modeling software such as PROMOD, DAYZER, AURORA, or UPLAN-NPM is an asset.

  • Soft Skills:

  • Excellent communication and synthesis abilities; able to translate complex analysis into actionable insights.

  • Self-starter with strong attention to detail and curiosity about market drivers.

  • Ability to operate in fast-paced trading environment with tight deadlines and evolving priorities.
