Senior Engineer, Unix Platform SRE will ensure the reliability, availability, and performance of Unix/Linux platforms using SRE methodologies. You will lead incident response for high-severity issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement permanent fixes in collaboration with L2 teams to minimize business impact. The role covers infrastructure automation, observability, capacity planning, and platform engineering to improve service stability and scalability. You will also contribute to security/compliance, change delivery, and documentation, while participating in 24/7 on-call rotations.
Role Responsibilities
Unix/Linux Platform Reliability: Ensure the reliability, availability, and performance of Unix/Linux platforms by proactively monitoring, optimizing, and improving system stability using SRE methodologies.
Operational Excellence & Incident Response: Lead incident response for high‑severity issues, perform root-cause analysis (RCA), and implement permanent fixes to prevent recurrence. Partner with L2 teams on escalated issues to minimize business impact.
Infrastructure Automation: Design and implement automation for system provisioning, configuration, patching, and operational workflows to reduce toil and improve service consistency.
Observability & Monitoring: Enhance observability through metrics, logging, and alerting solutions (Datadog, Prometheus, etc.), enabling early detection of performance degradation and system anomalies.
Capacity & Performance Engineering: Continuously assess system capacity, forecast resource needs, and optimize performance to support business growth and future scalability.
Platform Engineering: Contribute to the design, enhancement, and lifecycle management of Unix/Linux platform services, ensuring they meet reliability, security, and performance standards.
Security & Compliance: Implement system hardening, patching, vulnerability remediation, and compliance controls to safeguard platform integrity and meet organizational security requirements.
Project & Change Delivery: Support and lead infrastructure and platform-related initiatives, ensuring delivery against availability targets, timelines, and SRE best practices.
Documentation & Knowledge Sharing: Maintain accurate runbooks, architectural documentation, and operational procedures. Promote knowledge-sharing within the team through training, mentoring, and collaborative problem-solving.
Educational Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
- MSc degree in a relevant discipline will be an added advantage.
Technical Skills
- Strong expertise in Unix/Linux administration (RHEL, AIX, Solaris).
- Solid understanding of OS internals, file systems, kernel parameters, process management, and performance tuning.
- Strong shell scripting skills (Bash, ksh) and ability to troubleshoot complex OS-level issues.
- Strong programming/scripting skills in Python, Perl, etc.
- Proven ability to automate operational tasks and reduce toil.
- Hands-on experience with automation tools such as Ansible, Terraform.
- Practical experience with monitoring and observability platforms (Datadog, Nagios, etc).
- Ability to create SLIs, SLOs, dashboards, alerts, and reliability indicators.
- Knowledge of infrastructure-as-code tools and platform engineering principles.
- Experience with virtualisation technologies, SAN Infrastructure, Backup & Restore and underlying hardware architectures.
- Experience with system hardening, patching, and vulnerability remediation.
- Familiarity with compliance and security frameworks.
- Strong experience in on-call operations, incident response, RCA creation, and implementation of permanent fixes.
- Knowledge of ITIL incident, problem, and change management best practices.
