This role focuses on developing and maintaining a distributed system across multiple platforms and environments, with emphasis on reliability, fault-tolerance, performance, and data consistency for in-house and worldwide end-user deployments. You will design, implement, and deploy software across various Linux distributions, enable continuous delivery pipelines using Jenkins, and contribute to features for large-scale distributed systems including file systems and databases. You will debug C/C++ and Java code, collaborate with globally diverse engineers, engage with users and open-source communities, and consider enterprise requirements and security such as software scan reporting.
Job Summary:
- This role focuses on developing and maintaining a distributed system that operates across various platforms and environments.
- The primary focus is on ensuring system reliability through fault-tolerant mechanisms, optimising performance, and guaranteeing data consistency within this distributed environment that is operated both in-house and deployed to end-user locations world-wide.
Key Responsibilities:
- Designing, implementing, and deploying software across multiple Linux distributions such as Red Hat, Ubuntu, Galaxy and Microsoft server installations.
- Ensuring seamless integration and continuous delivery pipelines using Jenkins.
- Developing features for large-scale distributed systems, potentially focusing on areas like file systems and data databases.
- Troubleshooting complex issues, debugging code written in c/c++ and Java, and implementing fixes.
- Collaborating with other globally diverse engineers to design and implement robust solutions.
- Engaging with users and the open-source community, particularly with Browser based nuances.
- Developing an understanding of enterprise requirements and responding to customer issues.
- Considering security in software design and implementation with software scan reporting.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Strong understanding of Linux and its various distributions.
- Proficiency in programming languages relevant to distributed systems and Linux development, such as Python, C/C++, or Java.
- Ability to work in a command-line environment and script/debug in languages like Shell/PowerShell.
- Problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
- Experience with open-source contributions.
- Experience with build systems and tool-chains, potentially including cross-compilation for Linux and Microsoft.
- Familiarity with various architectures beyond x86 such as ARM.
- Experience with specific cloud technologies available from AWS, Azure, GCP and OCI.
- Experience with distributed systems concepts and technologies (e.g., messaging systems like Kafka/RabbitMQ).
- Familiarity with containerization technologies like Docker, Podman, Kubernetes and OpenShift.
- Experience with CI/CD tools and methodologies.
- Knowledge of databases, both relational (e.g., PostgreSQL, Oracle) and non-relational (e.g., NoSQL).
